Ten students and two staff from Horizons College were trackside at Willowbank Raceway for practice at the 50th anniversary of the Gulf Western Oil Winternationals today, after receiving special invitations to attend.

Horizons College of Learning and Enrichment is a non-state, Special Assistance School based in Caboolture, and is committed to assisting those young people for whom mainstream education is not meaningful. Horizons College commenced in 2014 and now caters for students across years 8 – 12.

The participants were chosen as a reward because they had displayed the school’s values and were treated as a result by TBR, Rapisarda Racing and Willowbank Raceway today.

Across the day, the students visited Team Bray Racing and met three-time champion Ben Bray who gave them a tour of the TBR pit area. They also met reigning 400 Thunder Top Fuel champion Damien Harris and enjoyed a tour of the Rapisarda Racing pit area.

When they weren’t getting up close and personal with racing stars and their machines, the students enjoyed the on-track action trackside as more than 500 racers hit the track for the first day of action at what is the largest championship drag racing event held outside of the United States.

“We are really pleased to have been able to play a part in offering these students this day out at the track and to let them experience this international sporting event,” Team Bray Racing’s Ben Bray said.

“Hopefully they have enjoyed their day out, learnt some new things and maybe, even found a new passion whether that is on-track or behind the scenes in the pit area!”

Of course the young people were really excited about the chance of seeing the cars and drivers but the visit to one of the world's great drag racing events also reinforced many of the lessons of their schooling.

“We would like to thank TBR and everyone involved for providing this wonderful opportunity for our students,” Horizons College Principal, Jan Robinson, said.

“It is such a privilege for our students to be able to speak with the team at TBR and to learn more about what the racing industry is all about.”
